First Blog of the year! Connecting land and sea ecosystems- bet you had no idea that the type of trees on a beach could affect the number for manta rays in the area...

  2. · A) 3 things you found out from the article (summary of the important stuff)

-Using pingers and trackers, marine biologists discovered that the manta rays are somehow attracted to the native forest coasts

-The heavily forested coasts provided shades and shelter to the birds which left nitrogen rich feces to be washed off into the ocean. The nitrogen rich water is suitable for breeding of zooplanktons. Through the links of the food chain in the marine ecosystem manta rays are eventually benefited.

-But when humans release nutrients such as nitrogen into the water, large amounts of nutrients is released in a short time which can disturb the balance of the ecosystem.

    · B) 2 ways this applies to Environmental Science
This article shows the intricate interactions between seemingly unrelated ecosystems, and environmental science studies those interactions.

This article also partially illustrated the nitrogen cycle between ecosystems, which our course extensively covers.

    · C) 1 question you now have after reading the article

How exactly does a large increase in nutrient in a short amount of time affect the balance of an ecosystem?
